Leading Wicket-taker: Gary Stewart 15 (2002-9)

Notes on the above fixture:
Blaydon’s score of 57 in 2002 is the lowest by any NEPL side at Denton Bank and their 58 at Denefield the following year is the lowest score The Hill has ever dismissed a team for away from Home in the NEPL. JC Adams 109* in 2002 was the only century scored against The Hill in the Championship season. PR Cummins record score came in his only away match versus Blaydon for The Hill and KJ Coetzer’s came in his first Hill innings versus Blaydon. MD Stoneman (who also made a century v The Hill for The Durham Cricket Academy in 2005) made his 106 before lunch in his first innings for Blaydon versus The Hill in 2007. AJ Maiden carried his bat for 54* at Denton Bank in 2009 and became only the second Hill player to do so in the NEPL (the other is SJ Birtwisle v Gateshead Fell (a) in 2006).

Notes on the above fixture:
Chester-le-Street’s total of 298-5 in 2005 at Ropery Lane is a record score against The Hill in NEPL cricket (Tynedale’s 315 in 1933 appears to be the record in all cricket).
The Hill’s 2002 Championship was clinched at Ropery Lane against the then Champions. ID Hunter’s 8-29 in 2004 was the best bowling figures against The Hill in The NEPL before RP Waite’s 8-28 for Stockton in 2006. PR Cummins’ 102 was his debut innings for The Hill. QJ Hughes’ 136* in 2005 is the highest by an opposition player on his home ground against The Hill in The NEPL. PJ Nicholson and G Race added 122 for the seventh wicket at Denton Bank in 2007 and that partnership is a club record in
all cricket.
R Frylinck recorded career best figures of 6-33 in his first match v Chester-le-Street in 2008.

Leading Wicket-taker: GM Scott 11 (2000-3)

Notes on the above fixture:
Three different grounds have been used by The Academy for the fixtures. In 2000, 2007 and 2008 Maiden Castle, in 2001 and 2009 The Riverside, DCCC Ground and from 2002-6 The Racecourse, Durham University. They were the last of the founder members sides to beat (at Maiden Castle in 2008) the Hill in the NEPL and had due to be the first ever to try. The first game of the first season (2000) was Benwell Hill v The Academy at Denton Bank. The match was abandoned without a ball bowled owing to rain. MD Stoneman and ME Cummins (brother of PR Cummins, BHCC 2005) compiled three successive 100 plus opening stands versus The Hill 2005-6. From 2007 onwards the Academy side has been coached by former Hill player JB Windows. The one wicket margin of victory achieved by The Academy in 2008 is the narrowest in terms of wickets in The Hill’s NEPL history, whilst their one run victory in 2009 is the narrowest in terms of runs. PJ Nicholson’s 670 runs against the Academy is a record for a Hill player against any NEPL team. The Academy alongside Hetton Lyons and Tynemouth have yet to beat the Hill at Denton Bank.

Leading Wicket-takers: WRS Gidman 14 (2007-9)

Notes on the above fixture:
MJ North’s 163* in 2000 is the record individual score against The Hill in all cricket. MJ North and A Dawe added 209* for the Third Wicket at Denton Bank in 2000 – a record for that wicket against The Hill in any cricket and the highest stand for any wicket in the NEPL against The Hill. M Bekker and D Orridge also hold a partnership record against The Hill. They made 146 for the sixth wicket at Eastwood Gardens in 2006 - a record for that wicket.  The 270-0 amassed by PJ Nicholson and SJ Birtwisle is the record partnership for any wicket in The Hill’s history. SJ Birtwisle made two of his four Hill NEPL hundreds at Eastwood Gardens and became the first Hill player to carry his bat in The NEPL there on 9th September 2006. Victory by seven wickets on 13th May 2000 at Eastwood Gardens was the first NEPL win for The Hill in our second match. Yasir Ali's 5-63 in 2006 was his Best Bowling figures in his last match for The Hill. WRS Gidman claimed 8-49 in a losing cause at Denton Bank in 2007; this haul is the best by an opposition bowler at The Hill in The NEPL. He also has the best bowling figures against The Hill at Eastwood Gardens and is the leading wicket-taker for Gateshead Fell in this series of figures. Both of Gateshead Fell’s victories in 2008 were by four wickets.

Notes on the above fixture:
Hetton Lyons gained promotion via The Durham Senior League. Their success in that league saw them replace Philadelphia for the 2006 season and thus become the thirteenth team in NEPL history. The first match between Hetton Lyons and The Hill (27th May 2006) was Hetton Lyons’s first home match in The NEPL, as ground development had prevented any home fixture until then. Hetton Lyons were relegated after one season in the NEPL. Lyons became the first side to be promoted twice with victory in the 2009 Durham Senior League. Their success relegated Norton for 2010.

Notes on the above fixture:
Newcastle were the first side to visit Denton Bank in The NEPL on Saturday 20th May 2000. Taufeeq Umar’s 149 was his debut innings for The Hill and included a hundred before lunch. The 307 total in that match in 2005 is The Hill’s highest total in NEPL cricket at Denton Bank and equalled the record in any cricket there made against Alnwick in 1997. MAP Dale made his maiden hundred for The Hill in his first innings against Newcastle from 76 balls at Denton Bank in 2006. SJ Birtwisle's 108 in 2007 was his first and only NEPL hundred at Denton Bank. AJ Maiden made 110* in 2007 on his first visit to Jesmond as a Hill player as did Zohaib Khan with 105 in 2009. MP Wright recorded the fastest NEPL fifty for The Hill at Jesmond in 2007. He reached his 50 from 28 balls, including seven 6s and two 4s. The Hill made a club record 308-9 at Jesmond in 2009, which included a club record fourth wicket partnership of 139 between RG Coughtrie and Zohaib Khan. RG Coughtrie made half-centuries in his first two innings against Newcastle in 2009. JR Irvine-Fortescue (who made 115 in his innings against the Hill) and J Carr added 165 for the second wicket at Denton Bank against the Hill in 2009 – a record for that wicket in all cricket. MAF Hynd the record runscorer for Newcastle in this series of matches joined the Hill in 2008.

Notes on the above fixture:
No Hill NEPL fixture has been so badly disrupted by the weather. A remarkable seven of the scheduled twenty matches have been abandoned without a ball bowled and five out of ten matches at Denton Bank have been washed-out! None of the five played have been drawn. In 2007 both fixtures were lost to the weather. Norton have had less chance than others to win at Denton Bank and had to wait to 2006 to achieve it by six runs which was the same winning margin for The Hill at Norton that same season. SJ Birtwisle made 107 out of a total of 199 at Station Road in 2006 and AJ Maiden his highest score there in 2009. Norton were relegated after finishing bottom of the NEPL in 2010 and their place taken by Hetton Lyons.

Notes on the above fixture:
Philadelphia were admitted into The NEPL from The Durham Senior League in 2002 to take the number of teams to twelve. Relegated following the 2005 season they were replaced by Hetton Lyons. Shahid Nazir claimed the only Hill NEPL Hat-trick in the 2004 fixture at Bunker Hill. Both Hill totals at Denton Bank were chasing targets set.
With Hetton Lyons they are the only team to have played in the NEPL to not have beaten The Hill.

Notes on the above fixture:
Roseworth Terrace is the only club ground belonging to a founder member NEPL side on which The Hill have yet to win in The NEPL. South Northumberland have the most victories at Denton Bank with five and the most overall with eight. They won three back to back victories at Denton Bank from 2002 with our only defeat in the Championship season. LJ Crozier (by no means the only player to appear for both clubs in the fixture) has had notable success for both clubs. In the matches between the clubs his record is remarkable with 19 wickets for The Hill and is the leading wicket-taker for South Northumberland with 27, which alongside RP Waite of Stockton and Chester-le-Street is the most wickets against the Hill in the NEPL. CJ Hewison’s 662 runs are a record for any player against The Hill in The NEPL.

South Shields were promoted via The Durham Senior League. Their Championship victory in 2006 saw them replace Hetton Lyons for the 2007 NEPL season and become the fourteenth team to play in The NEPL. They won on their first NEPL visit to Denton Bank on 11th August 2007 and repeated the feat in 2008. No batsman on either side reached fifty in the first two matches between the clubs. The Hill were dismissed for their lowest NEPL score of 56 in 2009 at Wood Terrace. The innings included a hat-trick by MJ Muchall, who claimed five wickets in an innings three times in his first four bowls at the Hill. R May made 118 in his debut innings against the Hill in 2009.

Notes on the above fixture:
Stockton were our first opponents in The NEPL on 6th May 2000 at Grangefield Road. The fixture at Denton Bank produced a positive result in every match until 2006 and the five Hill wins at home are only matched with home success against Tynemouth. Stockton’s 61 in 2002 is their lowest total against any opposition in NEPL history. On the other side their 280-5 in 2005 is the highest score made by any visiting side to Denton Bank in any cricket, however The Hill’s reply 283-2 is the highest successful run chase ever on the ground. RP Waite holds jointly (with LJ Crozier of South North) the record for the most wickets against The Hill in The NEPL with 27 and his return of 8-28 at Grangefield Road in 2006 is the best against The Hill in The NEPL. Mohamad Farrukh's 101* was his only hundred for The Hill as was DNG Myers’ in 2007. G Race and TJ Cant added an unbroken 64 for the ninth wicket to secure a famous victory at Grangefield Road in 2009. That partnership is a club record stand for that wicket.

RJ Sellers and JNH Walder added 143* for the eighth wicket at Ashbrooke in 2000 – a record for that wicket in any cricket for the Hill and a NEPL record. JP Taylor claimed 13-100 against Sunderland in 2004. He has 17 career wickets for The Hill 2003-4. A Mustard is the brother of P Mustard who represented The Hill in 2003-4.Shahid Nazir, Hill professional 2001-4 played for Sunderland in 2007-8.

The Hill has the most wins (11) against Tynemouth compared with any other NEPL club and away victories with 6. The five home wins are matched only with success against Stockton. Tynemouth are also one only three current teams (with the Durham CA and Hetton Lyons) not to have won at Denton Bank. Taufeeq Umar’s 164* in 2005 is the highest NEPL score for The Hill and the second highest in all cricket (after NCD Craig’s 175 in 1978, also against Tynemouth). DJ Barrick nearly achieved a memorable double at Preston Avenue in 2005. His 5-60 was followed by 97*. ML Pollard's 30 wickets is the most for The Hill against any NEPL club. MAP Dale’s 91 in 2007 at Preston Avenue surpassed his own 86 (made in 2006) for the highest away innings versus Tynemouth. AJ Maiden made 114* at Denton Bank in 2007, it was his first Hill hundred. Zohaib Khan claimed 5-19 in his first spell against Tynemouth in 2009.
